The reason that we setup this notice was to notify clients who is using CloudFlare DNS service instead of using our DNS. As we receive a numbers of customer ticket asking "Why our website is down", when there is no issue with our webserver or network, and we done a investigating check and notice the issue was caused by Customers using Cloudflare DNS which is down lead to their websites unreachable with Error Code 500.

As you can see that almost all the websites using Cloudflare DNS is down with Error Code 500, and this is not the first time for Cloudflare DNS goes down, unless you are using the Pro or Paid version of the service, if not any of the Free version is all down. So we recommend customers to use our DNS instead of CloudFlare dns, unless you using the Pro or Paid version, but 99% of the users is using CLoudflare free version.

So if your website is unable to reach check your DNS first before contacting your Provider, unless you using your Provider DNS. Eg. for Cloudflare dns can check the status at https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/

Why should we using MangoXchange DNS instead of using any 3rd Party Free DNS. The Answer is very easy, as our DNS system is using Clustering Setup which mean if dns1 down it will automatic work on dns2, which is not base on a Single Datacenter or Single Line. We have DNS servers in 8 different POP clustering with 4 setup, so we can provide our customers using our DNS with almost ZERO downtime. Of cos we are not saying 3rd party DNS no good, usually for such DNS company, free version got no policy but it all depend on your own choice.

So overall, we recommend customers use your own hosting provider DNS for better Reliable and Stable pointing of your domain or website, rather than using 3rd Party Free DNS.

MangoXchange, a global Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provider has today announced it has expanded to add a datacenter location in Oakland, CA. Immediately available in Oakland are MangoXchange’s virtual private servers (VPS), dedicated servers, colocation, disaster recovery, and private cloud service offerings. MangoXchange’s Oakland datacenter is carrier neutral, and provides rich access to tier 1 network providers, with 180+ Gbps of dark fiber connectivity to the Oakland IX for additional carrier connectivity options.

“The Oakland area is without a doubt a major hub on the Internet, and is home to a very large tech community and audience. With fiber landing points from China, Japan, and other countries, Oakland has grown to become a highly desirable location for server hosting over the years, and today we’re proud to open our doors to the audience seeking for servers to be geographically located in the Pacific Northwest. MangoXchange’s Oakland location is deployed from the very beginning with a true multi-homed network, and being in a carrier neutral facility means that we are easily able to expand and add additional network carriers to support our future growth as we go along.” explains Henry Goh, COO of MangoXchange.

Oakland has experienced an increased presence of technology oriented companies and jobs over the years. Also home to a handful of Fortune 500 companies, the location is poised to accommodate increasing datacenter services demand from end users, startups, and businesses.

“Oakland benefits from easy access to many audiences throughout the United States and Asia. As a global company with customers from every continent in the world (with the exception of Antarctica), MangoXchange’s expansion to Oakland accomplishes yet another milestone in our expansion roadmap, and we look forward to serving new markets with our complete suite of hosting solutions, now immediately available in Oakland.” Henry added.

We will be upgrading all our current webserver drive from SSD to NVMe.

How much faster is NVMe compared to SSD?

An NVMe drive is an SSD, the difference between an NVMe SSD and a traditional SSD is the interface used to access the drive's storage. A classic SSD uses a SATA III interface same as your typical spinning hard drive. This is because SATA III is cheap to produce, has a low system resource impact, and has been the standard for storage interfaces for years. However the flash memory in an SSD can reach speeds much faster than the 600MB/s theoretical limit of the SATA III connection. On top of this, flash memory can typically run in a bi-directional mode, (read and write simultaneously) where as SATA is strictly a one way street. This is where NVMe comes in.

NVMe based SSDs use a PCIe interface (yes the same kind of connection used for high end graphics cards and the like) to access the drive's flash memory. This makes NVMe drives more expensive to produce, however it also means the drives can run parallel read and write operations as PCIe is bi-directional and run at astronomical speeds. Current generation NVMe drives use a PCIe 3.0 connection, typically in a x2 or x4 mode. A PCIe 3.0x2 connection can run just under 2GB/s, and x4 just under 4GB/s respectively. This puts NVMe drives at speeds upwards of 2000MB/s compared to your typical SATA III SSD running under 600MB/s. With the upcoming PCIe 4.0 standard NVMe SSDs are only going to get faster, with projected figures at nearly 5000MB/s.

So if you are just looking for a number, your current generation NVMe averages around 1800MB/s faster than a SATA III SSD when running in x4 mode. The next generation of NVMe is expected to more than double that gap by being over 4000MB/s faster.

This currently upgrading is on Shared Hosting and VPS Hosting for Free. Dedicated Server customer or reseller can contact Customer Service for the upgrade price.

Recently, the United States Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) issued an alert regarding CVE-2014-6271, or the ‘Shellshock’ bug, a severe flaw in the bash Linux shell. This flaw allows attackers to gain complete control of a system with relative ease. A second vulnerability, CVE-2014-7169, was spotted while a patch was being written for the first.

UPDATE 9/29/14: Three additional vulnerabilities, CVE-2014-7186, CVE-2014-7187, CVE-2014-6277, were discovered early yesterday.

The status for MangoXchange customers as of 9/29:Managed Services: Your servers have been patched for all five vulnerabilities and our technicians are actively monitoring your infrastructure.

Self managed: It is critical that you patch your servers against all five exploits immediately. If you have not updated bash since Sunday, Sept 28 at 1:11AM EST, your system is vulnerable. If you use CentOS, here are the instructions to patch against the first exploit (CVE-2014-6271). To patch against the second exploit (CVE-2014-7169), reference Red Hat’s instructions.

To patch against the three new vulnerabilities:For CentOS 5, 6 and 7:

Update Bash:

yum update bash -y

Full system update:

yum update -y

For Ubuntu 10, 12 and 14:

Update Bash:

apt-get update
apt-get install bash

Full system update:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

If you are interested in learning more about the Shellshock bug, please see below.

How does Shellshock work?

Shellshock leverages other software packages such as Apache or CPanel that in some way relay instructions through to bash to be executed. At its heart, the exploit is very simple; if a web request is crafted in a specific way, it can be used to execute any instruction the attacker wishes.

It’s important to note that this is any bash instruction, meaning the attacker could do anything from see who is logged in, to planting the classic Linux ‘fork bomb’ and rendering the system useless until repaired.

Which Linux distributions are affected?

Nearly every Linux distribution for the last 20 years is exploitable, including:

CentOS 5

CentOS 6

CentOS 7

Ubuntu 10

Ubuntu 12

Ubuntu 14

To get more information about Shellshock, visit Shellshocker.net for the latest updates.

Again, if you are not a MangoXchange Managed Services customer, we strongly recommend you patch your Linux servers immediately. Should you require assistance, please contact our support technicians.

Dear Customer,

OpenSSL released a security report on 9 April 2014 that there is a vulnerability with OpenSSL.

“There was a devastating security flaw in the OpenSSL implementation of the SSL / TLS protocol (CVE-2014-0160), known as the heartbleed vulnerability. The heartbleed is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library. This weakness allows stealing the information protected, under normal conditions, by the SSL/TLS encryption used to secure the Internet. SSL/TLS provides communication security and privacy over the Internet for applications such as web, email, instant messaging (IM) and some virtual private networks (VPNs).

What versions of the OpenSSL are affected?

Status of different versions:

OpenSSL 1.0.1 through 1.0.1f (inclusive) are vulnerable
OpenSSL 1.0.1g is NOT vulnerable
OpenSSL 1.0.0 branch is NOT vulnerable
OpenSSL 0.9.8 branch is NOT vulnerable

Bug was introduced to OpenSSL in December 2011 and has been out in the wild since OpenSSL release 1.0.1 on 14th of March 2012. OpenSSL 1.0.1g released on 7th of April 2014 fixes the bug.”

For more information, you may refer to heartbleed.com.

For our shared hosting servers we are currently patching up our server which customer does not have to do anything.

For VPS/Dedicated/Co-location customer, please take action to patch up your server. If you are not sure if your server is affected by this bug, there are two methods to check.

The first method would be use this link > https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/

The second method would be:

- SSH into your server
- Run the following command: “openssl version -a” (without quotes)
- If the result shows “OpenSSL 1.0.1e 11 Feb 2013” and a Build earlier than 8th April 2014, then your server might be vulnerable.

To fix the vulnerability, kindly run the command “yum update” and install the fix.

If you have cPanel installed, the latest version for OpenSSL is 1.0.1e with Build 8th April 2014.

Once you have installed the fix, kindly do a reboot on the server.

Regards,
Edward Ho
Server Security Team
MangoXchange.com

Dear Customers/Partners,

This response is in regards to the outage that affected the MangoXchange, USA, Jacksonville facility on February 20, 2014.

MangoXchange experienced a power outage at 3:39PM EST on February 20, 2014 due to an upstream main breaker failing within our colocation facility (GoRACK). This was the main breaker to a power distribution panel that fed roughly 20% of the datacenter itself. The onsite facility engineers quickly identified the issue and worked to replace the breaker and fully restored power service within 30 minutes. After power was restored, there were a large number of individual customer servers that had to be powered on and individually checked for possible issues and hardware failures.

This outage affected roughly 600 of our total server footprint within the facility. This was not a total outage of all of our services.

During the outage, overall network connectivity was affected for approximately 8 minutes due to a considerable amount of upstream capacity dropping and routes having to reconverge to other paths.

We had full staff onsite at the time of the outage and everyone worked as quickly as possible to power machines on and return services to normal. Our internal systems were affected by this outage and caused our website and client portal to be unavailable for a period of time. We began restoring customers prior to restoring access to our internal systems.

The bulk majority of services were restored within 45 minutes of the outage occurring, however, there were some individual isolated issues where machines required extended FSCKs or hardware replacements. We worked as quickly as possible through the ticket queue to correct these individual problems with the affected customers.

Going forward we will be scheduling network maintenance windows to perform various upgrades to redundancies to ensure all switching and routing equipment is dual fed from redundant A & B power feeds. Additionally, we will be establishing a proper Disaster Recovery procedure for internal systems to allow for failover in the event of an outage to allow for quicker client communication.

We greatly apologize for not providing more information and details during the outage yesterday afternoon. We will be implementing new outage reporting procedures to ensure information is relayed as quickly as possible to those affected.

Regards,
Don
MangoXchange Support Department

Hello,

We have scheduled an upcoming maintenance window that will be utilized to perform necessary upgrades to our network infrastructure to allow us to continue to grow and provide stable and reliable services. This maintenance window could result in a network outage lasting 10-15 minutes while necessary changes and upgrades are made on our routers. Due to the nature of this maintenance, there could be a short network-wide outage lasting 5-10 minutes, followed by additional small outages for each cabinet lasting a few seconds. We will be performing work on each router individually, lessening the possibility for a complete outage.

Time of Window: Friday, July 19, 2013 @ 11:00PM Eastern
Synopsis: Network maintenance that could result in a network outage lasting approximately 15 minutes

Thank you,

Regards,
MangoXchange Network Team
